I’m so excited to be running my first blog competition and I could not have picked a better gift with my first wedding anniversary approaching!
In April 2014 my then boyfriend proposed to me in the most romantic way I could ever have dreamed of….he proposed to me in cake!! Whilst I was off in London enjoying a chocolate afternoon tea with an old school friend he was busy baking, and re-baking, 14 individual cakes to spell out the words WILL YOU MARRY ME. Not only did he bake all 14 individual cakes but iced them all with different coloured buttercream. They tasted amazing!
Of course I said yes and two years later in June 2016 we married in a beautiful ceremony at Battle Abbey, East Sussex. Unbelievably that was a year ago (how time flies) and as we approach our first wedding anniversary I could think of nothing more appropriate than a cake to give to my husband as a first anniversary present.
As an avid baker myself it was great to find someone else to do all the hard work for a change! bakerdays are a Gift Cake company based in Nottinghamshire who have developed a versatile colour and decorating process to create beautiful cakes that promise to taste like you made them yourself. They supply fantastic Letterbox cakes which fit through your letterbox meaning you can always ensure they will be delivered! This wasn’t the case with ours but we do have an exceptionally small letterbox! With next day delivery they make a great gift if you accidentally forget an anniversary or birthday. Or if you are super organised you can pre-order up to a year in advance!
They also sell cupcakes and larger celebration cakes and if you visit their website at www.bakerdays.com you can see just how many different occasions they cater for. Don’t see what you are looking for? Then they offer a bespoke design service for you to tell them exactly what you want. You can even send cakes internationally with shipping costs to 31 different countries catered for including Spain, Russia and Iceland.
The most important part of any cake-related decision has to be the flavour. bakerdays offer a fabulous fruit cake, traditional sponge with jam and cream, rich chocolate chip cake and have offered seasonal options of red velvet sponge or lemon drizzle (my favourite). They also have gluten, wheat and dairy free options which is great to see. Unfortunately this cake wasn’t for me so I didn’t chose the lemon drizzle instead opting for Rob’s favourite – fruit cake.
The cake arrived a day earlier than planned, which is a great guarantee of their timeliness! If you don’t want the recipient to open it then bakerdays can include a message saying don’t open until said date. Inside Rob’s box came a little set including a balloon, candles and a party noisemaker. A little card is included that you can add a personalised message on. It even has a little card telling you who packed your cake with care (Thanks Alistair). The cake itself comes in a little tin, and is wrapped in cellophane to keep the freshness in. I chose a scrabble themed cake, to represent the letters Rob baked for me all those years ago to propose – a perfect theme!
He absolutely loved the gift and loved the sentiment. He loved the way the cake was presented in a tin and the little extras included in the box were perfect. The best thing was the cake – such a rich and juicy farmhouse fruitcake and not too sweet.
Another handy addition to the box was a ten percent discount off my next purchase and believe me there will be another purchase – mmmm cake!!
BakerDays provided me with a free Letterbox gift cake to review and a second to giveaway to one of you lucky readers. All opinions expressed within this post are my own (and my husband’s) and I would not recommend something I wouldn’t honestly buy myself! You have four ways to enter this competition and the deadline is the 6th June. To enter simply follow me and/or bakerdays on Twitter, retweet my competition or comment on the blog below. Tell me which cake is your favourite on the bakerdays website.
Good Luck everyone and Happy Anniversary Rob!
