Brighton and Hove CCC – An Autumnal Harvest Festival

Bills, North Road, Brighton
Things have been quite hectic lately with my summer dedicated to fundraising and training for my Great Wall of China charity trek so it was great to throw myself back into all things clandestine and cakey! With a Monday night in late October the date set an autumnal theme was perfect and we were really lucky to have the well known Bill’s restaurant in North Road host our Autumnal Harvest Festival cake club meeting.

As the nights get colder and the days get shorter its that time of year that we all love to snuggle up in our thick winter coats, hats and scarfs! So a perfect opportunity to celebrate the autumn time with cake!

* Take inspiration from the harvest and make a vegetable themed cake
* Celebrate with our friends over the pond and bake an American or Canadian themed Thanksgiving cake inspired by the festive pecan or pumpkin pies!
* Or simply bake a cake thats autumnal in colour with hues of russet, and browns to replicate the leaves and trees at this time of year!
Pumpkin cake, pumpkin cake and more pumpkin cake!!!
It was a really wide open cake club remit so was really interesting that everyone had the same line of thinking!! A small group of four met at Bills which was great as we had a right old chat about all things cake and the time flew by. I had challenged myself to making a cake from Clandestine Cake Club’s very own cookbook and opted to try Gillian Tarry’s Lemon, Hazelnut and Parsnip cake. This had a cream cheese frosting and stem ginger throughout which tasted fab! Joanna, Sarah and Sally all interestingly opted for pumpkin cake but none of them tasted the same! Sally had a pumpkin cake with cream cheese buttercream with desiccated coconut for texture. Newbie Sarah opted for a gluten free pumpkin cake with raisins and a divine cream cheese buttercream (poor Sarah couldn’t even try any cake other than hers – I see some gluten free events in the future!!). Joanna opted for a pumpkin cake with half wholemeal flour and she topped hers with a white chocolate ganache. All three tasted great and all surprisingly different from each other! Have a look at the Clandestine Cake Club website if you fancy joining us next time!

Thank you Bills for hosting us!
