Baking Mad Application Questions

 WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS AND HOBBIES?
WELL I LOVE TO BAKE THAT GOES WITHOUT QUESTION AND I LOVE TO TRY OUT NEW RECIPES ON MY FAMILY, BOYFRIEND AND WORK COLLEAGUES. I ALSO LOVE TO TEST MYSELF BY MAKING NOVELTY CAKES FOR ALL MY NIECES AND NEPHEWS, EACH YEAR HAVING TO PRODUCE A CAKE MORE SPECTATULAR THAN THE LAST YEAR!!ASIDE FROM BAKING I AM AN AVID SPORTS FAN! I ALSO LOVE TO TRAVEL AND IN RECENT YEARS I HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO TRAVEL THE WORLD TO PLACES LIKE THAILAND, SOUTH AFRICA, SPAIN, ICELAND, MALAYSIA, EYGPT AND SINGAPORE
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ERIC LANLARD?
 I WAS AN AVID FAN OF THE FIRST SEASON OF BAKING MAD IN WHICH ERIC LANLARD INVITED LOCAL BAKING CLUBS INTO HIS HOME TO BAKE. I EVEN TRIED SOME OF HIS RECIPES INCLUDING THE BOXING CLUB’S GRANOLA MUFFINS. I HAVE HIS COX, COOKIES AND CAKE COOKBOOK AND AM HOPING THAT CAKE BOY WILL BE IN MY CHRISTMAS STOCKING THIS YEAR!
MORE RECENTLY I VISITED HIS COX, COOKIES AND CAKE SHOP IN SOHO WHERE I INVESTED IN A POP ART CUPCAKE WITH MARILYN MONROE CHOCOLATE TOPPER WHILST MY BOYFRIEND HAD THE COLA POP CUPCAKE WITH ADDITIONAL POPPING CANDY – BOTH WERE MELT IN THE MOUTH DELICIOUS!
HOW OFTEN DO YOU BAKE?
IF I HAD THE TIME I WOULD LIKE TO BAKE EVERY NIGHT!! HOWEVER CURRENTLY I BAKE ON AVERAGE ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK AND AGAIN AT THE WEEKEND. WHEN I DO BAKE ILL OFTEN TRY OUT NUMEROUS RECIPES, EACH AFTER THE OTHER MUCH TO THE PLEASURE OF MY COLLEAGUES WHO GET TO REAP THE BENEFITS.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU BAKED?
LAST WEEKEND IT WAS MY NIECE AILSA’S SEVENTH BIRTHDAY AND AS HAS BECOME ACCUSTOMED I WAS ASKED TO MAKE HER BIRTHDAY CAKE. HAVING MADE MY NIECE’S BIRTHDAY CAKE EACH YEAR MY FAMILY’S EXPECTATIONS CAN BE QUITE HIGH AND I FEEL THE PRESSURE TO PRODUCE A MORE IMPRESSIVE CAKE EACH YEAR AND THIS YEAR WAS NO DIFFERENT! I BAKED TWO TWO LAYER CAKES, ONE SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THE OTHER, WHICH I PLANNED TO STACK UPON EACH OTHER. THE NEXT DAY I DIRTY ICED THE CAKE BEFORE APPLYNG A TURQUOISE SPECKLED EFFECT SUGARPASTE TO REPLICATE THE COLOURS OF THE SEA. THE CAKE BOARD WAS COVERED IN MUSCAVADO SUGAR TO REPRESENT THE SAND AND I ADDED JELLY SWEETS IN THE SHAPES OF BUCKETS AND SPADES. ON TOP OF THE SECOND CAKE I ADDED A DOLL TO BECOME A MERMAID WITH HER SUGARPASTE SCALED TAIL WINDING DOWN THE TWO LAYERS. MY NIECE LOVED IT!!
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EFFICIENCY IN BAKING? 1 BEING “A CAKE? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?” AND 10 BEING “MOVE OVER ERIC LANLARD, THERES A NEW MASTER BAKER IN TOWN!”
A SEVEN WITH ASPIRATIONS TO BE A TEN!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TEMPERAMENT IN THE KITCHEN?
I BECOME QUITE EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO THE CAKES THAT I SPEND DAYS MAKING, ESPECIALLY WHEN I CONSIDER ALL THE WORK AND EFFORT I KNOW HAS GONE INTO PRODUCING THE CAKE. THIS DOES MEAN I CAN HAVE THE ODD TANTREM OR TWO WHILST IM BAKING BUT THAT JUST SHOWS HOW PASSIONATE I AM ABOUT BAKING.
WHAT IS YOUR PET PEEVE IN THE KITCHEN?
MY PET PEEVE WITH BAKING IN PARTICULAR IS PACKET MIXES!!! BAKING CAN BE SO EASY THAT IT IS FRUSTRATING WHEN PEOPLE JUST USE THOSE PACKET MIXES WHICH LACK TASTE AND DEPTH OF FLAVOUR!! YOU WON’T FIND THEM IN MY KITCHEN!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CAKE/DESSERT AND WHY?
I THINK THIS WAS ONE OF THE MORE DIFFICULT QUESTIONS IN THE ENTIRE APPLICATION AS I STRUGGLED TO PICK MY FAVOURITE CAKE OR DESSERT! I THINK A GOOD APPLE AND BLACKBERRY CRUMBLE IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE DESSERTS, WITH SOME CINNAMON AND CLOVES COOKED THROUGH WITH THE FRUIT AND A OATY/NUTTY CRUMBLE WITH BROWN SUGAR AND THEN SERVED WITH EITHER SOME SINGLE CREAM OR THICK VANILLA CUSTARD – HEAVEN!
DO YOU LIKE TO COOK ALONE? OR DO YOU PREFER COOKING WITH FRIENDS/FAMILY?
IM HAPPIEST WHEN COOKING, EITHER ON MY OWN OR WITH FAMILY. WHEN I CREATE BIRTHDAY CAKES I NORMALLY HAVE A FAITHFUL ASSISTANT IN MY BOYFRIEND, COUNSELING ME THROUGH THE HARD PARTS AND OFFERING HIS ARTISTIC PREFERENCES. HOWEVER, THE BEST PART ABOUT BAKING IS WHEN I GET TO BAKE WITH MY NIECES.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE BIGGEST OCCASION THAT YOU HAVE EVER HAD TO BAKE FOR?
I WANTED TO TRY AND MAKE CREME PATISSIERE AND AS I DID NOT HAVE MUCH TIME I BOUGHT SHOP MADE PASTRY TO SPEED THE PROCESS ALONG. THE ENTIRE ATTEMPT WAS A DISASTER AS THE CREME PATISSIERE TASTED MORE LIKE SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH FRUIT ON TOP AND UNBEKNOWN TO ME THE PASTRY WAS NOT COOKED SO I ESSENTIALLY SERVED SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH UNCOOKED PASTRY.
IF YOU COULD BAKE A CAKE FOR ANYONE DEAD OR ALIVE, WHAT AND WHO WOULD IT BE?
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT I WOULD LOVE TO COOK FOR ERIC LANLARD AND SEE HOW MANY CUPCAKES SCORE HE GAVE ME FOR ONE OF MY CREATIONS!
ASIDE FROM ERIC I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO COOK A DESSERT AND PUT IT IN FRONT OF GEORGE CALOMBARIS, GARY MEHIGAN AND MATT PRESTON, THE THREE JUDGES FROM AUSTRALIAN MASTERCHEF, A PROGRAMME I AM ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED TO.
