An Expat in Basel

I’m back!!! I guess after a twelve month absence I should start this post with an apology, but I can’t and I won’t!!!

I’m not being rude but these last twelve months have just been earth shattering! Change, change and more change and I’ve feel like I’ve made the most of each and every opportunity that has come before me. On this, the eve of my earth-shattering change, what better time to kick start my blog!!

I finished my old job, a job I’d been in for almost 13 years since graduating university. I moved from the town I’d lived in for 22 years other than my time at university. I moved house; not just across the street as some of my previous moves but over 500 miles away to a place I had only visited once before for a job interview.

Only two months previously I had applied for a job that I thought was beyond me; taking the brave leap from the public sector to the corporate world. I updated my CV and impressed myself with what I had managed to achieve but still doubted myself. I applied. I got an interview which on its own was an achievement and I was happy with that alone. Then I was offered the job!

Fast forward two months and I stepped off the plane in a city I’d barely heard of. Just stepping off the aeroplane was an adventure as I almost walked out into the wrong country! Basel is situated on the German French Swiss border so I almost started my expat life in France by mistake.

So with a new job, new house, new country, new language and new life I’m sure you’ll excuse the temporary silence! But now I’m back. I have a new look blog and lots to update your on!! Here’s just a flash of what this Expat has been up to!

  • Fasnacht in Basel.
  • Cable car up Mount Pilatus.
  • Mountain carting down Mount First.
  • Basel FC vs Manchester United football game.
  • Basler Herbstmesse.
  • Vogel Gryff.
  • Open fire fondue.
  • Basel Womens Institute Bake Off Competition.
  • Grindelwald
  • Lucerne.

Just do it!!! It was daunting and the language barrier is tough! My best advice would be to just trust in yourself when applying for jobs and who knows where they may take you!
